Don’t miss SJZ’s newest program exploring the music of exciting artists and the music that inspires them. This edition of “The Hang,” features torch/soul vocalist Karina Denike, Vic Wong and The Cottontails and is part of a weekend residency including a guest stint at the free all-ages SJZ Break Room Jazz Jam on Friday, March 6.

Come down early to have a drink and hang with friends and SJZ staff while listening to deep cuts from vinyl LPs personally chosen by Denike earlier in the day at one of Downtown San Jose’s prime album spots, Needle to the Groove. Needle drop is 7pm, sharp! At 8pm, they’ll perform live. After the concert, feel free to grab another drink and hang with the band for a chat from 8:45–9:30. Check out The Hang. It's part sophisticated listening session, part vinyl night, part live jazz performance, part discussion... and all hang.

Virtuosic chanteuse Karina Denike draws from 1930s torch songs, Motown soul, and blue beat to interpret rare gems of yesteryear. Schooled by East Bay jazz legends Jon Hendricks, Bobby McFerrin and Fred Marshall, her acclaimed solo release Under Glass was named one of KQED's Top 10 Jazz Albums of 2015.

Partnering with Denike is Vic Wong, a jazz guitarist, double-bassist, tenor banjoist and maker who specializes in early jazz styles of the '30s and '40s. Vic hosts a popular music community residency in SF and also performs with Franco Nero and the Alcatraz Islanders.

These Northern California natives perform as a duo, and as core members of one of San Francisco's most exciting musical groups, The Cottontails. Also featuring Michael McIntosh on piano, Joe Kyle Jr. on Bass, and Tom Griesser on reeds, The Cottontails play 20-30's jazz, to classic '40s swing, boogie woogie to jump blues and 60's ska to rare R&B soul. They have been presented by SF Jazz, Flower Piano, SF City Hall, Bimbo's 365 Club and Yoshi's, and toured Northern California, New York City, Tokyo, England and Germany.
