During the SubZero festival, San Jose Jazz presents a series of free drop-in performances and a music tech workshop/demonstration.

6-7pm: A live music tech exploration event for families and kids! Local musician and SJZ sound and lighting man Angel Ortega will unveil the magic behind live performances and how technology works to make music come to life. This is a great opportunity to learn about the basics of sound mixing and lighting for children who are interested in music, theater, and other arts.

7-7:30pm: Students from our Progressions program perform pieces from their repertoire. Led by San Jose Jazz educators Hugo Garcia and Monique Valenzuela, these students have been laser-focused on learning their instruments, practicing their scales, and performing as an ensemble. These students attend schools that lack the financial resources to invest in their own musical education. See what these bright and eager young students are able to accomplish with the help of a few dedicated music teachers!

7:30-8pm: There will be a 30-minute break in between performances. This is an opportunity for kids to explore the space, ask questions from educators and music techs, meet other musically-minded kids, chill at the water cooler, or use our restrooms.

8-9pm: We are thrilled to present “ Mariachi Oroazul”  , an exceptional ensemble that embodies the rich cultural heritage and musical excellence of traditional Mariachi. Composed of remarkable local musicians, Oroazul has been captivating audiences with their extraordinary talent, impassioned performances, and profound dedication to the mariachi tradition.
