Called “one of modern-day jazz’s most promising up-and-comers” by All About Jazz, vibraphonist Sasha Berliner has asserted herself as a creative, genre-defying composer and excellent bandleader with a sixth sense of yet-unheard possibilities.
While Sasha attended the New School for Jazz and Contemporary Music, she was the first US recipient of the LetterOne Rising Stars Jazz Award, landing her headlining spots at jazz festivals throughout North America. She has gone on to headline at venues like the NYC Winter Jazz Fest, Newport Jazz Festival, The Blue Note and Montreal Jazz Festival, and is an alumni of the Banff International Workshop in Jazz and Creative Music. She has worked with artists like Tyshawn Sorey, Nicholas Payton, Walter Smith III and Quincy Davis, and has been featured by PBS News Hour, NPR, and The New York Times for both her musicianship and her activism.
Sasha was named the 2020 DownBeat Critics’ Poll winner in the Rising Star, Vibraphone Category, being both the first woman and the youngest individual in the poll’s history to be granted the win. Her full length debut album Azalea, made up entirely of original work, has been described as “shimmering and thoughtful” (Kassel, TIDAL), and as “gleefully exploring various genres and head spaces” (Tremblay, CTEBCM). Her second album, featuring Marcus Gilmore, Burniss Travis II, James Francies and Jaleel Shaw, is expected to drop later this year.
