Utilizing her keen ear and sharp musicianship, Madison McFerrin constructs delicate, evocative soundscapes in real time. Building songs one loop at a time, her vocal phrasings and stacked harmonies reveal a musical master at work. The evening will include post-performance sets from Karine and Shakolin, resident DJs from beloved Kyiv nightclub Closer, and opening sets by The Changing Same DJs.
Since first developing in a musical family, Madison has charted a fruitful independent career, spanning three EPs and multiple collaborations, She has earned accolades from The New York Times, NPR, The FADER, and Pitchfork, who named her a Rising Artist in 2018. In addition to a stirring performance on the renowned COLORS Studio platform, McFerrin has also performed at Lincoln Center, Central Park SummerStage and BRIC Celebrate Brooklyn, and shared stages with the likes of De La Soul, Gallant, and The Roots.
Madison’s genre-bending work has led to Questlove dubbing her early sound “soul-appella.” The FADER has shared that “McFerrin’s warm harmonies feel effortless,” while Hypebeast noted she is “one of the most promising new faces within the [soulful r&B] genre.”
Off the stage, her music has been featured in episodes of Comedy Central’s Broad City and HBO’s Random Acts of Flyness. Working at the intersection of artistry and community building, Madison co-curated programming for the BRIC Jazz Festival in 2021, and in 2022, aligned her Mad Love initiative with the Brooklyn Bridge Park Conservancy to present three installments of Summer Fridays—a series focused on themes of Release, Restore and Rejoice with DJs, comedians and musicians providing some much needed space for healing from the collective trauma and grief of the pandemic. Most recently, she performed at the Saint Joseph’s Art Society in San Francisco and Joe’s Pub in New York City to support fundraisers benefiting the National Network of Abortion Funds.
Karine Shakolina has devoted her life to sharing the infectious joy of great music, and continues to chart her path as a rising star on the current dance scene. She is a resident DJ at Closer, the most celebrated nightclub in Eastern Europe, and doubles as the venue’s booker, locating talent for festivals such as Strichka and Brave! Factory in Kyiv. At locations around the world, including Amsterdam Dance Event, Berlin’s Club Der Visionaere, and ReSolute in NYC, she shares groovy sets that cover a wide range of genres, from experimental breakbeats to minimal and deep house sounds.
Andriy Shakolin is one of the most respected young artists on the Ukrainian dance scene, and a force at the Closer club in Kyiv. He grew up loving hip-hop, and found inroads into Ukraine’s club scene through meeting resident DJs at Kyiv club Closer. His dedication to the craft earned him a spot there as a resident, and inspired him to open Closer Record Store. This venture helped him discover sounds old and new, and upgrade his collection with no limits in genre and time. Currently based in Berlin, he plays sets around the globe, from ReSolute parties in New York to Berlin’s Club Der Visionaere and underground spots in Seoul, South Korea.
