NEA Jazz Master Billy Hart comes to the SJZ Break Room to give a free master class at 5pm, then performs with renowned bassist & producer Tarus Mateen and up-and-coming pianist Joe Warner. This special performance is held in conjunction with International Jazz Day!

Billy Hart is one of the most sought-after jazz drummers of his generation, able to perform in diverse contexts ranging from straight-ahead to avant-garde to pop. Over his 66-year professional career, he has toured and recorded with some of the most influential jazz musicians of all time: growing up in Washington, D.C., he began touring in the groups of Jimmy Smith, Wes Montgomery and Eddie Harris at an early age. Upon moving to New York, Hart became associated with a group of like-minded and forward-thinking musicians, recording with Pharoah Sanders, Wayne Shorter, McCoy Tyner, Joe Zawinul, and, especially, Herbie Hancock, with whom Hart spent three productive years in the band now known as Mwandishi. He also appeared on the seminal Miles Davis 1972 album On the Corner. Other notable periods of work include four years with Stan Getz and almost ten years with Charles Lloyd.

Tarus Mateen has collaborated with The Roots, Terence Blanchard, Common, Outkast, Korn, Tommy Hilfiger, Jason Moran, Ice Cube, Ms. Lauryn Hill, George Benson, Marc Cary, Christina Aguilera and many more. His creative genius and mastery of acoustic bass, electric bass, rhythm guitar, and piano make him one of the most sought-after musician/producers in hip-hop, house, blues, rock, reggae, soul, and straight ahead jazz. After attending Morehouse College and majoring in music, Tarus joined Art Blakey's band in New York. He has also contributed to Terence Blanchard's scores for Sugar Hill and Malcolm X.

Pianist Joe Warner is one of the Bay Area’s brightest young talents. He is Pianist and Musical Director for The Dynamic Miss Faye Carol, leads the Joe Warner Trio, and has also performed or recorded with Jeff 'Tain' Watts, Gary Bartz, Elena Pinderhughes, Marvin 'Smitty' Smith, Casey Benjamin, Willie Jones III, John Santos and John Handy, among others.

International Jazz Day is an international celebration of jazz with events happening in more than 190 countries! This year's All-Star global concert takes place in Tangier, Morocco! Learn more and get involved at
