An unforgettable learning experience

Since 1997, our Summer Jazz Camp has been teaching and inspiring hundreds of young musicians each summer. This extraordinary learning opportunity is now helmed by Carl Schultz, director of jazz studies at Santa Clara University.

Summer Jazz Camp is a wonderful opportunity for middle and high school students to learn about every aspect of jazz, including music theory, improvisation, composition, ear training, performance and much more.

Carl Schultz, Camp Director

Carl Schultz has studied and performed throughout the world. He received his BM from SUNY Purchase, moving to the University of the Arts for his Masters and then on to the University of Colorado, receiving his Doctorate in 2014. Carl was privileged to study with notable saxophonists including Ben Schachter, Javon Jackson and Ralph Lalama.

He then spent years touring internationally with the Glenn Miller Orchestra and has also worked with popular artists including Dr. Dog, Lillian Boutte and Henry Butler. He has performed at prestigious events like Celebrate Brooklyn, Philadelphia's Concert in the Park series and After the Flood: From New Orleans with Love.

In 2015, Carl served as artist in residence at Penn State’s Altoona campus and has delivered guest performances and lectures at many universities including Philadelphia’s University of the Arts, University of California Davis, and Lehigh Valley College. He currently serves as the Director of Jazz Studies at Santa Clara University. Carl Schultz’s most recent recording is ACT reACT, featuring the compositions of his mentor, Art Lande.
