Every Monday night San Jose Jazz co-presents this free jazz jam at Five Points beginning with a concert by the house band followed by an open jam session for any local jazz musician itching for a chance to hone their skills in live performance. The house band changes each week with a new bandleader who’ll contribute their own distinctive voice. Get ready for an evening of new discoveries in sound and musicianship, and don’t forget your instrument!
This week’s leader is drummer Sutton Marley. Born and raised in the Bay Area, Marley has been an active member of the local jazz community in San Jose since 2008. During his time in college, Sutton spent a year at the University of North Texas studying with master drummer and educator Ed Soph before moving back to California and receiving an English degree at UC Davis. Since then, he has shared the stage with some of the finest musicians in the South Bay, including Amy Dabalos, Oscar Pangilinan, Brian Ho, Mason Razavi, Rick Vandivier and many others. As a sideman, Sutton has performed at venues such as the Black Cat, Cafe Stritch, Yoshi’s, Art Boutiki and multiple appearances at the San Jose Jazz Summer Fest.
Five Points Cocktail Bar is one of downtown San Jose’s brightest spots for drinks and conversation. You’ll find delicious craft cocktails, distinctive local brews and limited menu of tasty bar bites, along with a jazz jam each Monday and the best regional jazz musicians Tuesday evening, curated by SJZ.
