Over the course of a multifaceted career spanning four decades, Grammy and Tony Award-winning jazz giant Dee Dee Bridgewater has ascended to the upper echelon of vocalists, putting her unique spin on beloved standards. Ever the fearless pioneer and keeper of tradition, the three-time Grammy winner has performed with such jazz notables as Max Roach, Sonny Rollins, and Dizzy Gillespie. All but one of her self-produced albums has been nominated for Grammy Awards, including her double Grammy-winning tribute to Ella Fitzgerald, Dear Ella.
Bridgewater has also pursued a parallel career in musical theater, winning a Tony Award for her role as “Glinda” in The Wiz in 1975. Her other theatrical credits include Sophisticated Ladies, Cabaret and the Off-Broadway and West End productions of Lady Day, for which Bridgewater received the British Laurence Olivier Nomination for Best Actress in a Musical.
Bridgewater’s latest studio album is 2017’s Memphis… Yes, I’m Ready. At Winter Fest 2018, she’ll perform songs spanning the course of her acclaimed career with the San Jose State University Jazz Orchestra under the direction of Dr. Aaron Lington.
High School All Stars, San Jose Jazz’s audition-based big band, will open this special evening at 6pm.
