With her stunning vocal approach, Russell is amongst the greatest interpreters and performers of American Popular Song. Featured on the HBO-TV series, Boardwalk Empire, soundtrack, two-time Grammy award-winning vocalist Catherine Russell was also nominated for her 2017 recording, Harlem On My Mind, for Best Jazz Vocal Album.
A native New Yorker, Russell was born into musical royalty. Her father, Luis Russell, was Louis Armstrong’s long-time musical director while her mother, Carline Ray, was a pioneering vocalist/guitarist/bassist who performed with International Sweethearts of Rhythm, Mary Lou Williams and Sy Oliver.
To universal acclaim, Russell has performed on four continents including major jazz festivals like Monterey, Newport, North Sea, JazzAscona, Montreal, Bern, Rochester International, Panama, Tanglewood and at sold out venues like The Kennedy Center, Scullers in Boston, The Dakota in Minneapolis, Jazz at Lincoln Center, SFJazz and Pasadena Pops in Los Angeles. Over her career, Russell has shared the stage with top industry artists like Carrie Smith, Steely Dan, David Bowie, Cyndi Lauper, Paul Simon, Jackson Browne, Michael Feinstein, Levon Helm and Rosanne Cash, among others, touring the world and appearing on over 200 albums.
Russell will be accompanied by the SJSU Jazz Orchestra, conducted by Dr. Aaron Lington, who is director of SJSU’s Jazz Studies Program. An in-demand performer, composer and educator, Lington also directs the concert’s opener, the San Jose Jazz High School All Stars big band.
