16th annual Smith Dobson Youth Jazz FestivalFebruary 26-27, 2009 (Thursday & Friday) The Smith Dobson Youth Festival is an annual 2-day competition for Middle and High School musicians. 500 performers from those local schools have the opportunity to meet nationally known adjudicators and to obtain music scholarship awards. During the Youth Festival, San Jose Jazz also gratefully carries on the tradition of presenting “The Educator of the Year”.

San Jose Jazz would like to thank everyone who was able to participate in the 2008 Smith Dobson Youth Jazz Festival. The musician-participant’s love for music shown bright and was a pleasure to see. The winners for each of the categories are as follows: - Santa Clara University, Jazz Combo (College) - Valley Christian High School, Jazz Combo (High School) - Buchser Middle School, Jazz Choir (Middle School and below) We are happy to announce the overall winner of the festival as the Jazz Combo from Valley Christian. This group will receive some recording time for a CD as their grand prize.
These three winning groups will all be granted an opportunity to play in the Jazz Festival in August (8/8 – 8/10/2008) at the “Future of Jazz” stage. Gunn High School ’s Jazz Combo is also included in this invitation due to their high scores and enjoyable performance. We will be continuing with a combo format for next year’s festival. However the name will be changing to “ Battle of the Bands”. Keep up the great work and look forward to seeing you again this next year, if not sooner.
