San Jose Jazz Winter Fest 2014, presented by Metro, showcased a “cool” counterpart to our celebrated Summer Fest by presenting emerging jazz talent that’s pushing the art form forward. 2014 artists included saxophone hotshot Anton Schwartz, LA-based composer and viola player Miguel Atwood-Ferguson, adventurous bass virtuoso Thundercat, blues/soul diva Nikki Hill; rising LA vocalist Moses Sumney, straight ahead pianist, composer and bandleader Amina Figarova, and 2014 Grammy®-winning alternative Latin powerhouse La Santa Cecilia, among other artists.
We also placed a spotlight on education with weekend master classes and two afternoons of student band performances. This year we saw the San Jose Jazz High School All Stars alongside San Jose State University Jazz Orchestra, Kuumbwa Jazz Honors Band, Valley Christian High School Big Band, Santa Teresa High School Big Band, and Folsom High School Jazz Band. Various local artists joined the festivities as part of our club crawl, performing at venues La Piñata, Los Gatos Brewing Company, 71 Saint Peter, and the Hedley Club inside Winter Fest 2014 festival partner Hotel de Anza.
