John Altman (saxophone), Mike Lang (piano), Putter Smith (bassist), Paul Kreibich (drummer)
In this show, award winning composer/arranger/saxophonist John Altman gives his witty and entertaining personal take on jazz and the movies. Giving behind the scenes anecdotes from his career, which began onstage at the London Palladium at the age of 3 with Judy Garland, and which has encompassed working with and befriending some of the great figures in the movie industry, past and present, John presents a memorable musical journey through a fascinating life. Along the way we hear tales of how he taught Michael Caine to sing, wrote over an hour of music for the all time biggest grossing movie, gave Pierce Brosnan his first big break, wrote jingles with Sir Salman Rushdie, got Muddy Waters and Bob Marley to perform at his birthday parties, formed the first charity supergroup which directly led the way to Live Aid, and how he came to co – write the anthemic Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life with Eric Idle.
Plus of course the music played by an all star line up of Los Angeles jazz players, all with major movie connections. Pianist Mike Lang, apart from being one of the finest jazz musicians in California, carved his niche in movie history when he played the musical mnemonic for the aliens in Close Encounters of the Third Kind. Bassist Putter Smith, apart from working with Thelonius Monk and Art Blakey among others, also played the role of James Bond’s nemesis Mr Kidd in Diamonds Are Forever.
